In January 2011, I rang the Pyne Arms to see if I could find someone in the village who was remotely interested in family history. I knew my great grandfather John Lloyd had taught at the Board School (now the village hall) between 1890 and 1900 but knew no more than that. I was not prepared for the level of interest, enthusiasm and help from Sarah at the pub! Within a few days I had a photo of John from 1895 thanks to farmer Bryan Smyth and the promise of a warm welcome should I ever come to East Down! John Lloyd is the adult on the right in the photo below.

I had already planned to cycle across Exmoor in August this year and it was easy for me to visit the village. Sarah recommended A Night in Gail’s – a great guest house just up the road in Kentisbury which was just what I needed. And the pub was so welcoming that evening as was the excellent food and drink! Everyone I met made me feel at home and I found out a lot about the village and the old school.
Best wishes to everyone!

My master Tim took me for miles all over the place and so was very tired.
Here is a pic of me on Saunton beach wet and bedraggled. I did enjoy myself.
