The Pyne Arms is in the small picturesque village of East Down, and the pub is signposted on the main road. It is set in a valley with rolling acres of land and rises in bold hills to the north with the villages of
Churchill, Clifton and Bugford. East Down Manor belonged to the ancient family of Downe and later passed to the highly successful Pine/Pyne Coffin family and although the house is no longer in the
family the pub maintains this link to village heritage and history through the name Pyne, the crest and motto of the Pines: "In tempestate floresco".
The pub is convenient for those visiting the National Trust property of Arlington Court, also just off the A39 beyond the East Down turning towards Arlington Beccott. Watermouth, Combe Martin, Woolacombe, Saunton,
Croyde, Lynton and Lynmouth are all popular places to visit in the area and the Pyne Arms is just a short drive to stunning Exmoor National Park.
There are several public footpaths in the area for walkers to enjoy, and the village itself is peaceful and picturesque and quintessentially Devon.
The Pyne Arms has adopted 'Seemples' the meerkat at Exmoor Zoo (formerly The Exmoor Bird Gardens), which is just over 6 miles from East Down village.
