The Pyne Arms is a family-run business and the Proprietor Sarah took over the lease of the pub in October 2009. Sarah will be assisted by her Mother Margaret and Father Philip, who have been locals in the village of East Down for over 23 years. In fact, in the 80s Sarah used to be the full time Bar Maid in the Pyne Arms, but never imagined she would end up over 20 years later running the pub herself.
Sarah worked for many years in the tourism and hospitality industry, and spent 5 years working overseas as a Holiday Representative in Greece and Spain. She then moved back to the UK to become the Petty Officer/Senior Stewardess on board the luxurious Hebridean Princess cruise ship. The 90s saw her becoming an Air Hostess flying out of Gatwick with a major UK airline to destinations worldwide before finally making the decision to return to education full-time. Sarah undertook an Honours Degree at the Seale-Hayne campus in Tourism Management, gaining a First Class with honours, and becoming a published academic. During her degree years she also spent 3 years employed by the University as a Residence Warden and helping out at ad hoc conferences and events and summer work as the lettings officer.
Sarah recently moved back to East Down from Hayling Island, where she worked for several years in Community Development with Hampshire County Council and Winchester City Council. She was responsible for setting up voluntary groups that have gone on to become highly successful and winning nationally recognised awards for their community projects and unusual activities such as Scarecrow Festivals and heritage projects amongst many other things.
Sarah is passionate about community issues, and so hopes that The Pyne Arms will be a business that helps bind together local people, and the pub runs regular quiz nights and hopers to have more events and community facilities, including giving free Internet access to customers. The Pyne will be selling a small range of essentials and Sarah will collect the Sunday newspapers for any customers wishing to book one to collect from the pub. We will be opening for lunch on Christmas Day also.
Please do feel free to contact us for anything, and if you've been a customer or have memories to share, then do get in touch. If you are a local business and would like to be added to our Local Links on the website, just let us know. Also if you have an event you would like us to host, do get in touch with us.
Our aim is to provide a good range of quality wines, spirits and ales. We are committed to serving traditional home-cooked fare using as much produce sourced locally as possible. Keep an eye open for our forthcoming menu which is coming shortly. We have ample car parking, so groups can also be easily accommodated.
Very best wishes, we look forward to seeing you soon!
Sarah
